Yes, yes it is. Have a terrible picture of two Osprey’s flying by as I was strapping the Finnlet in the back of the car.

I used to ride in them a lot, they are pretty cool.

You can usually hear and the feel the rumble of the Ospreys. Occasionally they fly over to NYC for special events (4th july, fleet week etc). They fly in formation with Chinooks as well.

They didn’t really look that big. The fuselage looks like it is probably slightly bigger than a Chinook. It is really tough to judge sizes on things that are flying by because it is so tough to judge distances when there are no fixed reference points.

I didn’t notice any rumble coming from these, though they were flying past in airplane mode. They definitely sound different because of the proprotors. It’s hard to describe, but seems to be about halfway between helicopter and airplane.

Should I assume you are a Marine?

The aviation aficionados will tell you that a helicopter and a plane are the same thing, but I don’t wanna be that guy.

For me in that picture it already looks big, bigger than any helicopter I’ve seen IRL that wasn’t at an Air and Space museum. I kind of envy you guys who live near military bases/stations because I’m sure you see some cool stuff. Coolest thing I ever saw was a B52 in broad day light a couple of weeks after 9/11 here in NYC. My friend lived on the 5th floor and I was looking out the window when I saw it. I knew what it was and told him to come look out and see, it looks amazing in motion.

The last time I saw them the tilt rotors weren’t in full aft mode. But I think the Chinook were the majority of the thumping noise.

We were just vacationing in Florida. We were staying pretty close to Eglin AFB, so got to see pretty much daily flyby’s of F-16's, plus a couple C-130's in the distance, a Chinook and what looked like a Seahawk which would have been out of one of the Navy fields near Pensacola. Maybe a flight of F-18's the first day, but I didn’t get a good look at those.
